Speaker:  Mohamed F Mokbel – Shoreview, USA
Topic(s):  Information Systems, Search, Information Retrieval, Database Systems, Data Mining, Data Science

Abstract

To achieve a high impact, computer science systems research needs to stem out from a real need and addresses practical problems for real customers. Solutions have to be simple to be deployed in real systems. Publicity for the system, the problem it addresses, and the solution are crucial for the high impact. This talk presents a personal recipe on how to do computer science systems research. The talk goes through several examples of how to come up with a practical research problem that ultimately leads to a successful PhD dissertation. The talk also discusses the approaches to solve and publicize your solutions. Several recommendations are given throughout the talk on Do's and Dont's in computer science systems research.
